Patan Devi in Patna is one of the 51 Shakti Pitha in India and is a very sacred holy shrine for the Hindus. It is believed that the right thigh of Devi Sati had fallen here according to the Hindu Mythology, the remaining part fell to 50 other places across the country. The temple enshrines the black stone idols of goddess Kali, Goddess Laxmi, Goddess Saraswati and Bhairav. Badi Patan Devi is the main temple whereas Choti Patan Devi, situated nearby is also very sacred.
Badi Patan Devi is situated in Maharajganj area of Patna City whereas Choti Patan is situated in nearby Chowk area. Both temples are separated by roughly one kilometer. Badi Patan Devi temple faces North towards the Holy Ganga. All the idols are made up of black stone, placed on throne. There are idols of many other deities also. Regular Artis are held in every evening. Facilities for Havan is also available. Choti Patan Devi houses several Brahmanical images of gods and goddesses, including Surya, Vishnu and Ganesh.
Being a Shakti Pitha, it is visited by large number of people. During Navratri and Ram Navami, thousands of people visit to worship the deities and a fair is also held nearby. A number of shops are present near the temple from where one can buy Prasads and other offerings for the deity. Patan Devi is the most sacred temple in the city.
How to reach :
There are two ways to reach Badi Patan Devi. One can reach via Gandhi Maidan-Ashok Rajpath-Patna City main road. The temple is situated some half a kilometer from the main road (ahead Har Mandir Takht). One can also reach via Gulzarbagh railway station. It is less than half a kilometer from the station. Rick-saw is easily available.
Chhoti Patan Devi can be reached easily by ricksaw or any private mode of vehicle from the Badi Patan Devi temple. It is situated in the same area nearby.
