Patna Women's College is a premier college of the state and was the first institution of higher learning for women in the state. Established in 1940 and shifted to current location in 1948, this institute has produced several famous personalities in its 75 years of journey. The college celebrated its Platinum Jubilee Celebration in 2014. Situated by the side of Bailey road and opposite to Patna High Court, the magnificent buildings of Patna Women's College attract the attention of the passer by. It is affiliated to Patna University since 1952.
The college is run by the 'Sisters of the Apostolic carmel' . The college was initially started to provide education till Intermediate(+2) in Arts only. However, within a year, it got the approval to run the courses till Graduation. The College started Science courses since 1988. The land where the college stands today was provided by the then Governor of Bihar, Lord Rutherford in 1945. He wanted the building to be as impressive as the oppositely situated High Court. The founders of the college did not let him down. The marvelous building of the college is built in combination of Hindu, Islamic, Norman and Gothic style. The white color adds charm to its beautifulness.
The College provides courses in a variety of subject and streams. It
offers a total of 19 Mainstream UG courses, in addition to 6 vocational
UG courses, beside 1 course in PG Mainstream, 3 courses in vocational
PG course and 1 course in B.Ed., totaling 30 courses. It offers B. Sc. in
Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, and Botany , beside subsidiary in Mathematics,
Physics, Chemistry, Zoology and Botany. The Arts courses includes Hindi,
English, Urdu, Sanskrit, Home Science, Philosophy, Economics, History,
Geography, Political Science, Sociology and Psychology. It also offers
courses in B.Com & B.Ed. beside providing vocational courses in
Industrial Microbiology, Computer Allocations, Mass Communication,
Business Administration, Media studies and Sales Management. The PG
courses available are Home Science, Fashion Designing, Computer
Application and Advertising & Sales Management.
Till very recently, the College was a prime destination for Intermediate
Courses among girls until Intermediate Course was removed from the
Patna University. The college has the reputation of providing the
education of highest standard, keeping itself aloof from the bandh
activities of the University. It is most sought after college for the girls,
not only because of the education, but also of the extra curricular activities
that keeps on happening throughout the year. 'Freshers Day Celebration'
is one of the most famous activity of the student association. The college
has several Students Organization.
ECO Task Force : The College has an active task force which works for environmental education, protection and conservation since 1992. It is called ' Environment Conservation Outreach (ECO) Task Force '. It was established on June 5th, 1992 when the important environment summit was going on in Rio De Jeneiro. Today, it has over 1,500 members. Each move of the ECO Task Force is motivated towards conserving nature and earth taking care that ecological balance is maintained . The basic aim of Eco Task Force is to inculcate in students and in the community (urban and rural) an awareness of the environment, its problems and the need to protect Earth.
Patna Women's College is a landmark college of Patna which has shown its solidarity towards the development of Women in the long term, now approaching the Platinum Jubilee year of establishment. It has produced several gems for the State and the Country. The Alumni group of the college is also quite big.
