Patna University (PU)

Established in 1917 and accredited as full-fledged university in 1952, Patna University is the seventh oldest university of the Country and the first in the State. The University has jurisdiction over Patna city. It has two campus - the main campus being situated between the river Ganga on one side and Ashok Rajpath on the other side and the second being at Saidpur. It is the foremost university of Patna. Patna College, which is a part of PU, is older than the university itself, being established in 1863.

Patna University (PU) is spread in an area of 182 acres. It has 8 faculties taught in 10 constituent colleges.  There are 31 post graduate departments. Some of the departments are quite old, like Department of Education (1954), Statistics Department (1948), Persian Department (1917), Sanskrit Department (1919), Maithili Department (1944) etc. PU also runs Master of Business Administration courses, Industrial Safety Management Courses and Rural Management and Welfare Administration courses. However, the campus is not located at one place. The colleges are situated at different places. While Patna Women's College is located in west Patna, Patna Law College lies in the eastern part. The postgraduate faculties are also not located at one place or in continuity. Darbhanga House is the largest center of postgraduate teaching and research in the university. It houses 20 departments of Humanities and Social Sciences. The department of History is located at Darbhanga House, the Sociology department is located at Vanijya Mahavidyalaya, the geography department functions at Patna College, the Law department is situated at Rani ghat and the department of Science faculty are located on the premise of Patna Science College. The Saidpur complex houses residential quarter for teaching and non-teaching staffs. The University Central Library is well developed having over 4 Lakh volumes, 87 periodicals and 50000 back journals. It also 5000 old manuscripts, some of them being rare. The university has its own press.

Though one of the oldest universities in India, PU has not been able to maintain its high standard of academic excellence that once characterized during 1950s and 1960s. Lack of qualified and sufficient number of teachers coupled with absence of modern infrastructural facilities and adequate fund has affected much of its once glorious reputation.
